Mbappe scores twice as Madrid ends Barcelona's winning streak

Kylian Mbappe scored twice on Sunday night to help Real Madrid defeat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou. The result stopped Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in the Spanish top flight and gave Real the lead in the all-time head-to-head record for the first time since 2017.

The French forward reached 100 total goals for Real Madrid with his brace. Since joining the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, Mbappe has accumulated 14 goals this season. He is currently the second-best scorer in La Liga, following a previous campaign where he won the Golden Boot in both La Liga and the Champions League.

The victory at Camp Nou marked the second consecutive defeat for Barcelona. The Catalan side had previously fallen to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League just days before this match. Had Barcelona won on Sunday, they would have broken Real Madrid's record for the best start in Spanish top flight history, a mark set in the 1968-69 season.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has guided the team to five consecutive victories across all competitions. This run includes three wins in La Liga and two in the Champions League. The squad improved after losses to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month, which had disrupted their early season form.

In the league standings, Real Madrid sits third with 24 points after 10 matches. They are three points behind Barcelona, who lead the table with 27 points. Atletico Madrid sits in second place with 25 points. The gap between the top two teams has narrowed since the start of the season.

Mourhower took charge of Real Madrid after two seasons without trophies for the club. He previously won a record-breaking La Liga title during his first spell at the Bernabeu. The manager has not won a league title since guiding Chelsea to the Premier League crown in 2014-15.

After the match, Mourinho said that winning at Camp Nou proves the team is playing to win the championship. He noted that if the team loses their next away match, the victory at Barcelona will mean nothing. The 63-year-old manager celebrated the result with a knee slide, marking a positive start to his return to the Spanish top flight.
