Island Transit has rebranded its vanpool service as a rideshare program. The change reflects an updated structure for sharing vehicles among commuters who travel to or from Island County.

The agency previously operated this service under the name Vanpool. The new terminology applies to groups formed by residents who share similar commutes. No new vehicles have been added to the fleet as part of this announcement.

Groups may form with as few as three participants or as many as 12. Staff recommend four members to ensure the vehicle remains in use if one person is absent. Existing groups determine their own routes, schedules, and meeting locations.

Each group must appoint at least two drivers, one primary and one backup. The group also needs a manager and a bookkeeper. One individual may hold all three roles. New members must contact Island Transit staff to verify vehicle availability before recruiting co-workers or neighbors.

Participants must submit a Rideshare Participant Agreement. Drivers must also complete a Driver’s Application. The agency requires a $17.00 payment designated for a Motor Vehicle Record check. This fee covers the agency’s cost to obtain the driver’s record.

Once the record is approved, drivers must complete an online defensive driving course. Island Transit provides and pays for this course, which takes two to three hours. Individuals seeking electric vehicles must complete additional agreements and an orientation before receiving the vehicle.

Residents may also join an active group instead of forming a new one. They can contact staff for a list of groups seeking riders. If no local match exists, the agency suggests using the free ride matching service on Rideshareonline.com. Fares are based on the daily roundtrip commute miles of the vehicle.
