Island Transit converted its Navy Bus Service into a fixed route on September 27, 2026. The change provides free transportation for Naval Air Station Whidbey Island personnel, their family members, contractors, and veterans. The system is open to the general public as well.

The new schedule replaces previous arrangements with set bus times. Riders can access the National Experience Center and areas surrounding the base. The route extends to downtown Oak Harbor, where passengers can reach restaurants, the waterfront, and local shops. It also serves parks, beaches, and trails, including Deception Pass.

Passengers can connect to off-island service at March’s Point. From that location, routes travel to Mount Vernon and the Skagit Valley. All Island Transit buses operate with a no-fare policy. Vehicles are designed for accessibility and allow riders to bring bicycles.

The transit authority provided a guide for first-time riders. Passengers should locate Island Transit bus stop signs and arrive a few minutes before the scheduled arrival time. Schedules are posted online and at many stops. Riders enter through the front door and exit through the rear door when possible.

Drivers are available to assist passengers who need help identifying their stop. Riders can tell the driver their destination and pull the cord or press the button to signal when they should get off. The service aims to offer a reliable alternative to driving for those who want to explore the island or need to connect to other routes.

Those who need assistance planning a trip or understanding connections from NASWI to other routes can contact dispatchers. The phone number for questions is 360.678.7771. All current bus routes and times are available on the Routes and Schedules page of the Island Transit website.
